Spherical steel shot according to SAE J444/827 is used for abrasive blasting, surface preparation of metal surfaces, and surface hardening of heavily loaded parts.

Chemical composition:

  • Carbon (C) — 0.80 — 1.20 %
  • Silicon (Si) — min. 0.4 %
  • Manganese (Mg) — 0.60 — 1.20 %
  • Phosphorus (P) — max. 0.05 %
  • Sulfur (S) — max. 0.05 %
  • Iron (Fe) — balance

Properties:

  • Hardness — 390 — 530 HV
  • Density — min. 7200 kg/m3
  • Microstructure — fine-grained martensite + bainite

The application of spherical steel shot according to SAE is very broad:

  • final processing of elements produced by pressure casting;
  • removing scale from long rolled steel and non-ferrous metal surfaces, heat-treated surfaces;
  • processing aluminum bicycle and motorcycle frames before painting;
  • deburring;
  • surface preparation for painting, high-temperature soldering, grinding, leveling;

Crushed steel shot according to SAE J444/1993 differs not only in number but also in hardness and is divided into several groups according to international standards.

Application areas of shot from four groups: GS, GP, GL, GH

Our range of shot is available in four groups: GS, GP, GL, GH. The difference in hardness determines differences in applications and results. Let’s take a closer look at each of them.

GS grade shot has a hardness of 390 — 530 HV (40-51 HRC) and can be used in the same processes as cast shot, except for surface hardening. It features increased abrasive capacity — providing 15% higher surface roughness compared to cast shot, high cyclicality, and can be used for:

  • preparing the surfaces of pipes and steel structures before applying protective coatings, insulation, or primers;
  • removing contaminants such as old paint coatings, corrosion layers, and adhered grease masses.

GP shot with a hardness of 470 — 610 HV (47-56 HRC) has a similar application scope to the previous group, with minor differences in roughness and increased grain durability. It can be used for:

  • foundry production and heavy machine building to remove molding mixture residues;
  • effective surface preparation for enamel application and prior to galvanizing.

GL shot with a hardness of 570—710 HV (54—61 HRC) is used in more demanding processes, such as cleaning heavy rolling scale, processing high-carbon steel products, gray and chilled iron, and removing scale after heat treatment. Its high anchor surface roughness ensures better adhesion of all types of coatings, including rubberizing.

Crushed GH shot with a hardness of 700 HV (60 HRC) or higher has the highest hardness but also noticeable brittleness, resulting in reduced cyclicality. Due to frequent chipping and consistently sharp edges, it performs well on soft metals and is primarily used for surface finishing.
